Faculty/Staff Updates

Greetings to all the friends of Chicanx/e and Latinx/e Studies at UW-Madison!
We are grateful for your ongoing support in ways big and small – by keeping in touch, attending out speaker series events, volunteering for the program, and making donations when you can. You’ll read more about all our activities in this issue of the newsletter.
Our new major in Chicanx/e and Latinx/e Studies continues to grow, and our outstanding faculty continue to garner important awards, grants, and accolades in support of their research in Chicanx/e and Latinx/e studies. We are proud of our students who have won scholarships, started new campus organizations, participated in community service, joined study abroad programs, and hosted important cultural and educational events on campus. We want to do everything we can to support this ongoing work.
We have had great turnouts for our campus lecture series this year on “Building Communities of Care and Resilience in Times of Crisis,” and as you’ll read in this newsletter, each event allowed us to think critically about both histories of discrimination against Latinx peoples and the many ways that our communities have resisted and persisted. The opportunity to think together on these topics has been particularly valuable as so many of us are dealing with the fear and terror instilled by ICE raids in the communities where we live and work. Every day we hear about students and their families being affected, as in the recent story about the Honduran American student denied due process and deported while traveling home to visit her family for Thanksgiving. We salute all of you who are engaged in helping those affected.
Throughout the year, we also worked on plans to commemorate our 50th anniversary next year. Thank you to all the former students, faculty, and staff who have given us oral history interviews and shared materials in this process. We look forward to sharing the exhibits we are developing with all of you next year. In preparation for that anniversary, we are inviting you to consider making a special donation in 2026 to help us meet our 50K for 50 years goal! Now more than ever, we need to fund Latinx studies students and research. Already we have raised $2680.00 toward this goal. We’ll share more on this campaign soon.
Wishing you all a peaceful holiday season.
Best wishes,
Theresa Delgadillo
