The Chican@ & Latin@ Studies Program is delighted to announce the opening of the 2021 Jesus Salas Academic Activist Scholarship Competition and the 2021 “Somos” Development Award Competition for students and faculty. Applications for all awards are due April 5, 2021.
Every Spring, the Program awards at least one $500 Jesus Salas Scholarship to at least one exceptional undergraduate enrolled in the CLS Certificate who has excelled academically and made outstanding service contributions to the Chican@ and Latin@ Community. The awards honor former UW-System Regent and community activist Jesus Salas and are supported by donations from Regent Salas himself and from other generous alumni, including Assistant Dean Daniel Malacara.
The “Somos” awards will provide up to $1500.00 for professional, academic, or artistic initiatives, preferably to be carried out during the summer or academic year following each competition. Examples of eligible initiatives include travel to professional meetings, research expenses, research assistants, travel to collections, training that would enhance teaching, and creative projects. Students may apply for the award through the Wisconsin Scholarship Hub (WiSH). Faculty may email their applications to the Program office. Please review application instructions for students and faculty before submitting. The awards are supported by generous donations from CLS emerita Andrea-Teresa Arenas and her husband, former Chancellor John Wiley.
