Is there a “Latinx Vote?” Armando Ibarra Analyzes the Election in “The Progressive”

Is there such a thing as “the Latinx Vote?”  In the wake of the 2024 election, pundits have been focusing on an apparent shift from Democrats to Republicans by voters of Latin American descent. Former CLS Director Armando Ibarra thinks that abstractions like “The Latinx Vote” may keep us from understanding what’s really going on in politics. In a recent article for The Progressive, he breaks down the “complex interplay of class, generational perspectives, gender, and specific community concerns” that shapes the Latinx voters’ engagement with politics.  In particular, he highlights a class divide among people of Latin American descent, coupled with notable differences in voting behavior along lines of national origin and generation.  Armando Ibarra is a Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor in the School for Workers and the Chican@ & Latin@ Studies Program.
