Alfonso Morales Contributes to Artificial Intelligence Research, Helps Farmers Markets

Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor Alfonso Morales has finished a successful run as chair of the Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture, but he’s not resting on his laurels. This semester, he has served on the program committee for the NSF funded 2025 Summit on AI leadership. He also made a presentation, and he was responsible for the conference keynote speaker Cary Coglianese. He also convened the Farm2Facts External Advisory Board, part of a 10+ year old applied research project that has created an online toolkit to help managers of farmers markets use data to make decisions. In addition, he continues to serve Campus PI for the NSF funded AI institute – Intelligent Cyber Infrastructure in Computational Learning Environments (ICICLE). He also delivered a day-long training to the Land Restoration Academy, gave the keynote address for the International Public Markets Conference in Milwaukee, participated in a Badger Talk: Food Systems Forward – Chequamegon Northwoods Food Coalition presentation, and provided provided commentary for the College of Letters and Science’s Up North WI. Finally, with collaborators, he published an article titled “Scalable Inter-County Food Flow Prediction Using Graph Neural Networks” in the proceedings of the 33rd ACM International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems.
