Racial Fluidities and Alternative Knowledges in 21st Century Ethnic Studies

This program features scholars whose research centers multi- and cross-racial
alliances, experiences, and relations. Ethnic studies has long championed the in-depth
examination of the cultures and experiences of Latinxs, African Americans, American Indians,
and Asian Americans, and continues to do so. We have also long been dedicated to examining
each of these groups in relation to dominant white society. However, over the past two decades,
our fields have increasingly turned to examining the ways that African American, American
Indian, Asian American and Latinx communities relate to and regard each other. In this panel,
scholars will take up racial fluidities among groups, alternative knowledge built across groups,
and the possibilities for coalition and further research.
