Message to the CLS Community on COVID-19 Response

Thanks to all of our CLS students, instructors, and staff for the patience, calm, and thoughtfulness you have all shown in the wake of the University’s decision to hold classes remotely, cancel events, and send many students home through April 10th.  The health of the campus community is our Program’s top priority.  As we adjust to the developing situation, we wanted to update you on the status of the CLS Program’s operations.

For now, the Program’s offices in Ingraham Hall, including the ARC and the CLS Library, will be closed during regular business hours until April 10th. Staff will be working remotely and can be contacted individually about work matters.   The library is part of the library system, and you can check its hours on the UW Library website.  For questions or requests about accessing or returning library materials, contact Peter Haney at chicla@letsci.wisc.edu.

In response to the Chancellor’s directive, the Program has cancelled the CLS Gatherings scheduled for March 26th, April 2nd, and April 9th.  Dígame sessions during those Gatherings are also cancelled.  Students needing mental health services can find information on the UHS website.  The UHS 24-hour crisis line is (608) 265-5600 (option 9).

The Migration Conference that was scheduled for April 27-28th, which we were organizing with the LACIS Center, will be postponed until the Fall.

CLS instructors are meeting today to discuss ways to ensure the best possible educational experiences for students in our classes.  The Program will do everything it can to be a resource for instructors and students in these difficult times.  Instructors should also consult the University’s continuity of instruction website for resources.

If you are a CLS student and have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Rachelle  Eilers, Armando Ibarra or Peter Haney.  Rachelle will be working remotely beginning on Monday, March 16th. She is happy to meet via phone, Skype, Facetime, text, etc. You may call her during working hours at (608) 852-7700. Students can continue to schedule via Starfish. In the notes, please include which mode of contact you prefer and at what number/user name she can contact you.

As we continue to adapt to this evolving situation, we wish everyone good health and the very best.

CLS Staff
