Because of COVID-19-related disruptions to campus operations and student life, the Chican@ & Latin@ Studies Program has extended the deadline for the new “Somos” development award competitions for students and faculty. The Deadline for Spring 2020 awards is April 10th. Application procedures have not changed. The “Somos” awards are made possible by the generous support of Dr. Andrea-Teresa Arenas and her husband, former Chancellor John Wiley and will fund professional, academic, or artistic initiatives, preferably to be carried out during the summer or academic year following each competition. Examples of eligible initiatives include travel to professional meetings, research expenses, research assistants, travel to collections, training that would enhance teaching, and creative projects. Applications will be screened by a committee of CLSP faculty and staff who will determine the award winner or winners. The committee evaluating the applications will be mindful of the uncertainties surrounding research and professional activity during the outbreak and will allow for flexibility in the timing of initiatives. Students may apply for the award through the Wisconsin Scholarship Hub (WiSH). Faculty may email their applications to the Program office. For more information, contact the Program’s office via email or call (608) 263-4486.
