CLS faculty member Armando Ibarra shared his thoughts on migration and the upcoming US election with reporters Alfredo Corchado and Dudley Althaus of the online news outlet Palabra for a recent story about the politics of migration. Centered on profiles of recent immigrants from Nicaragua working in Milwaukee, the story sought to give context for ongoing debates about migration policy. The stories described in concrete terms the dynamic that Ibarra summed up by saying, “No matter what happens at the border, a transformation of sorts takes place once the migrants arrive at their destination. The labor demand for them is huge. …. The harsh anti-immigrant rhetoric versus reality on the ground are two different things. But here they suddenly somehow coexist.” Ibarra is a Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor with the School for Workers and the Chican@ & Latin@ Studies Program. Palabra is a project of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
