Curious about the constitutional amendment referendum on the ballot for the November 5th election? CLS faculty can help. This week, CLS affiliate professor Ben Márquez joined host Chali Pittman and guest John Nichols on the Tuesday edition of WORT radio’s “A Public Affair” to discuss the proposed change, which would amend Section 1 of Article III of the state constitution to state that “only a United States citizen age 18 or over who resides in an election district may vote in an election for national, state, or local office or at a statewide or local referendum.” The section currently states that “every United States citizen age 18 or older who is a resident of an election district in this state is a qualified elector of that district.” What would the switch from “every” to “only” mean for voting rights in Wisconsin? Márquez and Nichols addressed that question and analyzed the referendum in light of the politics of migration and citizenship in the current election.
