What does it mean to display the Mexican flag, or any other national flag for that matter, on U.S. soil? That question is on many minds recently as the green, white, and red banner flies over demonstrations in Los Angeles and elsewhere against Federal immigration enforcement actions. In a June 11th television interview with Telemundo in Chicago, CLS Director Theresa Delgadillo, an expert in Latinx visual culture, noted that Mexican Americans have long waved the flag as a symbol of cultural pride, particularly in the face of discrimination and marginalization. In Wisconsin, multiple ethnic and cultural communities wave national flags at cultural celebrations. Delgadillo also noted that those peacefully waving the Mexican flag in protests against ever-widening immigration raids are affirming their vision of a United States that accepts, celebrates, and respects cultural pluralism.
