My name is Diana Bonilla, and I’m a first-generation senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Legal Studies and Chicane Latine Studies, with a certificate in Criminal Justice Studies. In my free time, I love to snuggle up and watch a good movie with a tasty home-baked dessert and a cafecito (of course). I’m also president of the Latine Student Union.
Being part of the Latine Student Union allows me to connect with the broader Latine community on campus and listen to their stories. As a senior who now meets with incoming first-year students, I often see reflections of my younger self in them. It’s truly meaningful to offer guidance, encouragement, and connections to resources and the wonderful Latine staff across a predominantly white campus.
As president, much of my work happens behind the scenes, from planning programming logistics to meeting with higher administration. I am fortunate to lead a hardworking and compassionate executive board that is deeply committed to fostering a welcoming space rooted in inclusivity, resilience, and comunidad for our members.
In the end, I’m rewarded by seeing our events come to life and watching students and staff enjoy themselves. I know an event is a success when I hear the room fill with chatter, laughter, and a strong sense of comunidad. I encourage everyone, Latine-identifying or ally, to join us every other Thursday at 6pm for our general body meetings. From warm cultural dishes to meaningful conversations, it is the Latine Student Union’s mission to build a strong community and presence on campus.
