Lola Loustaunau Publishes Research on Farm Labor

CLS Program faculty member Lola Loustaunau published a paper on wildcat strikes in 2020 by Latina apple pickers in Washington state, and she presented the results from the Wisconsin Farmworker Coalition’s community-driven survey project on April 1st. The Washington study examined the ways that the COVID-19 crisis moved the apple workers to strike after a lack of attention to workplace safety made their efforts to care for their families outside of work even more difficult than they had been before. The Wisconsin study surveyed over 200 agricultural workers about their working and housing conditions, access to healthcare, and immediate needs, in collaboration with community organizations and state agencies, filling critical data gaps as government collection on this population declines. The findings reveal two distinct worker populations with dramatically different needs: year-round workers (concentrated in dairy_ prioritize immigration legal services, while seasonal workers (concentrated in crop work) face severe housing crowding and prioritize health care access. Lola Loustaunau is an Assistant Professor with the School for Workers.
