Dr. Nidia Bañuelos and her colleagues from the School of Education, Kyoungjin Jang-Tucci and Dr. Ross Benbow, have created a quantitative measure of Community Cultural Wealth (Yosso, 2005) that can be included in student surveys and assessments. Instead of focusing on the problems faced by undergraduates of color, the research seeks to understand what strengths and resources those students bring to their learning experiences. These items, which were tested with 932 college students across the country, capture the assets BIPOC students receive from their families, languages, cultures, communities, and experiences navigating complex bureaucracies. The results were published in the journal Education Evaluation and Policy Analysis. Nidia Bañuelos is an Assistant Professor of Adult, Continuing, and Higher Education. She studies the design and implementation of new postsecondary programs for working adults, and has a special interest in the history of “non-traditional” learners and the institutions that serve them.
