New Major in Chican@ & Latin@ Studies Created

The Chican@ & Latin@ Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will offer an undergraduate major in Chican@ & Latin@ Studies starting Fall 2023.  On March 30th, the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approved the proposal for the new major, and the CLS Program is moving forward with implementation.  This will be the first such major offered at a university or college in Wisconsin and the second major in U.S. ethnic and indigenous nations studies offered at the University of Wisconsin.  Creating a CLS major was among the major goals of the movement for Chicano Studies on campus, which began with student protests in 1974.  Today, that vision is ready to become a reality.  A special word of congratulation is in order to the students whose desire for knowledge has always animated the Program, to the early leaders in the movement, to the Program’s dedicated staff and faculty, and to the administration of the College of Letters and Science, which has provided crucial support over the years.  A story by Kimberly Wethal in today’s edition of the Wisconsin State Journal offers more information about the new major and the CLS Program’s recent growth.
